Philips Design

Founded in 1891 in Eindhoven, Netherlands, Philips is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of lighting and health care products. Its divisions include Lighting, Electronics, and Healthcare. Philips focuses on making the world healthier. Philips is a member of the Euro Stoxx 50 stock market index and the New York Stock Exchange. Philips employs around 80,000 people in 100 countries.

In 2006, Philips collaborated with Sony to launch Blu-ray, the first optical disc format that uses coded technology. In addition to Blu-ray, Philips designs and manufactures DVDs and the Compact Disc format. Philips and Sony also collaborated on the development of coding technologies for the DVD. Philips is one of the largest investors in the Taiwan-based TSMC. In 2010, Philips IPO’ed its semiconductor division.

Philips’ design team uses a multi-disciplinary co-creation process to develop products that address some of the world’s most significant health challenges. In 2011, the team was awarded the Red Dot Design Award three times, and it has been rewarded for design excellence in more than 27 different categories. This includes product design, interaction design, and packaging design.

The Philips Experience Design Team is a team of designers and technologists that apply advanced technologies and human-centered design to address the most important challenges in healthcare today. The team is focused on improving the patient experience and improving staff and patient experience, as well as increasing personalization and improving decluttered workspaces. They are also responsible for developing integrated solutions and intuitive devices. They have been awarded the Red Dot Design Award of the Year 2022.

In 2007, Philips’ design team created the “Light Forest” LED lighting installation, which was part of the company’s “Skin” exploration project. Philips’ designers also developed the “Bubbelle” collection of dynamic garments. These were also part of Philips’ ongoing SKIN exploration project.
